A practical guide to accounting jobs in Manchester and Greater Manchester. Find out where the work is, from Big Four and large firms to business finance teams and the public sector, plus UK pay ranges, AAT and apprenticeship routes, and how to make your application stand out.

By Tony Musso on

Manchester is one of the strongest places in the UK to build a career in accounting outside the capital. Deloitte, PwC, EY and KPMG all have offices in the city, alongside large firms such as BDO, Grant Thornton, RSM and Forvis Mazars. Around them sits a big financial and professional services sector, plus the finance teams of businesses spread across Greater Manchester, from the city centre out to Stockport, Bolton, Wigan, Oldham and beyond.

Public sector employers add another layer. Greater Manchester councils and NHS trusts all need people to manage budgets, pay staff and report on spending. This guide walks through the kinds of accounting work you will find in Manchester and Greater Manchester, the UK-wide pay ranges for the main roles, the routes in and how to make your application count.

Where the accounting work is in Manchester

Accountancy firms

Working "in practice" means your employer sells accounting services to clients. In Manchester you can choose between the Big Four, the large national firms listed above and a long tail of independent practices serving local owner-managed businesses.

  • Audit. You test the figures and controls behind a company's annual accounts. Audit trainee intakes are the classic entry point for graduates, and they give you a fast tour of many different businesses.
  • Tax. You work out what businesses and individuals owe and help them plan ahead. Work can range from personal tax returns to corporate tax, VAT and employment taxes.
  • Advisory and specialist teams. These cover areas such as transactions, restructuring and risk. They tend to recruit people who already have a few years of audit or tax behind them.

Independent practices usually offer a broader mix. In a single week you might prepare year-end accounts, file a VAT return, run a payroll and sit down with a sole trader to go through their self-assessment. Small firms are often open to people who are still studying.

Finance teams in business

The other main path is "industry": joining the finance function of a company, charity or other organisation. Greater Manchester has plenty of this kind of work across sectors such as retail, manufacturing, logistics, property, media, education and technology.

Entry-level jobs here include purchase ledger, sales ledger and credit control. With experience you can move to assistant accountant, then to management or financial accountant, and later to financial controller or finance manager. The work centres on month-end reporting, budgets and forecasts, and trainees often study ACCA or CIMA.

Financial and professional services

Manchester's financial and professional services sector creates demand for accountants who understand regulated businesses. Typical work includes financial reporting, management information, regulatory returns and internal audit. Experience gained auditing financial services clients is useful if you want to move across into this area later.

Public sector

Greater Manchester's councils and NHS trusts employ finance staff at every level, from payroll and accounts payable to management accountants and heads of finance. These roles usually come with set pay scales, a defined benefit pension and steady hours, and some employers will support you through a professional qualification.

Routes into accounting in Manchester

Start with AAT

AAT is the usual qualification for bookkeeping and junior accounts roles. It runs at Levels 2, 3 and 4, and you can study it at college, online or alongside a job. Finishing Level 4 can earn you exemptions from some ACCA papers if you decide to go further.

Earn while you train

Accounting apprenticeships pay a wage while your employer covers the cost of training. The ladder starts at Level 3 (assistant accountant) and tops out at Level 7, where the training takes you all the way to a chartered qualification such as the ACA, ACCA, CIMA or CTA. Large firms, councils, NHS trusts and businesses in Greater Manchester all use apprenticeships. Our guide to how accounting apprenticeships work explains what to expect.

Join a graduate intake

The big firms in Manchester recruit graduates into audit, tax and advisory, and you rarely need a finance degree. Expect online tests and an assessment centre, and apply early.

Move across from another job

If you are changing career, a junior finance role while you study for AAT or ACCA is the most common route. Admin, payroll, banking and customer service experience all transfer well. Our accounting qualifications page compares the options, and ACA vs ACCA helps if you are deciding between the two main chartered routes.

Finding vacancies

  • Set up alerts on the big job boards, using Manchester and the Greater Manchester towns near you as locations.
  • Check the job boards run by ICAEW, ACCA, CIMA and AAT, which list roles suited to students and members.
  • Register with two or three specialist finance recruiters who cover your level.
  • Apply directly on firm websites for graduate, school leaver and apprenticeship programmes.
  • Look on council and NHS trust careers pages for public sector finance roles.
  • Write to small local practices with a tailored CV.

Making your application stand out

Lead your CV with where you are on your qualification, for example "AAT Level 4 complete" or "ACCA, Applied Skills passed". Name the systems you know, such as Xero, Sage, QuickBooks or a larger ERP, and describe real tasks: bank reconciliations, accruals, supplier payments, month-end deadlines met. The TonyKnows CV builder can help you set this out clearly.

Employers in practice and industry both want care with detail, confidence in Excel and the ability to explain figures to non-accountants.

Manchester or London?

Manchester offers many of the same firms and qualification routes as London, with a lower cost of living and shorter commutes for most people. London has more financial services roles and a larger overall market. For a direct comparison, read our guide to accounting jobs in London. Wherever you start, your qualification and experience go with you if you later move.
