How to Become an AI Ethics Consultant in the UK
AI ethics consultants help organisations build and use AI responsibly: assessing risks such as bias, privacy and transparency, writing AI policies, setting up governance and preparing for regulation such as the EU AI Act, which applies to UK businesses selling into the EU.
The field is new, so there is no single route. Most people come from law, policy, data protection, risk, data science or academic ethics, and add AI governance knowledge on top.

What a AI Ethics Consultant does
Advise organisations on responsible AI - bias, transparency, EU AI Act, governance and policy.
How to become an AI ethics consultant in the UK
Build on an existing specialism. Lawyers and data protection professionals add AI knowledge; data scientists add governance, ethics and regulation; policy and ethics graduates add enough technical understanding to talk to engineering teams. Useful credentials include the IAPP's AI Governance Professional (AIGP) certification and knowledge of ISO/IEC 42001, the AI management system standard. Many start inside a company's AI governance, risk or privacy team before consulting independently.
- Pick your starting base: law, data protection, risk and compliance, data science, or policy and ethics.
- Learn the main frameworks: the EU AI Act, ICO guidance on AI and data protection, the UK's AI regulation principles and ISO/IEC 42001.
- Take a recognised course or certification such as the IAPP AIGP.
- Get hands-on: run an AI risk or impact assessment, write an AI use policy, or review a model for bias, at work or on a public project.
- Join an AI governance, responsible AI or privacy team, or a consultancy's AI risk practice.
- Publish your thinking and build a network, then take on independent advisory work.
| Route | How long | Cost | Best for |

How long it takes
If you already work in data protection, law, risk or data science, one to two years of focused learning and project work is usually enough to move into an AI governance role.

Does the EU AI Act apply to UK companies?
It can. UK businesses that place AI systems on the EU market, or whose AI outputs are used in the EU, can fall under it, which is one reason demand for AI governance expertise is growing in the UK.
How much does an AI ethics consultant earn in the UK?
Roughly £40,000-£55,000 at entry level, £60,000-£80,000 mid-level and £95,000 or more for senior advisers.
