How to Become a CRM Manager in the UK
CRM managers own a company's customer data and the automated marketing built on it. They plan email, SMS and app campaigns, segment customers, run welcome, retention and loyalty programmes, and report on the revenue that comes from existing customers. Day to day you work in platforms such as Salesforce, HubSpot or Braze, alongside marketing, data and product teams.
Most people get there after one to three years in a CRM executive, email marketing or marketing automation role. A degree helps but is not essential, because hiring managers care more about the campaigns you have run, the results you can show and your skill with the main CRM platforms.

How to become a CRM manager in the UK
There is no required qualification. A common path is marketing executive or CRM executive, then CRM specialist, then CRM manager. Free platform training from HubSpot Academy and Salesforce Trailhead, plus paid Salesforce certifications, help you prove tool skills. Qualifications from the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) or a Level 3 or 4 marketing apprenticeship give you a structured route if you want one. You must understand UK GDPR and the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR), which set the rules on consent for marketing emails and texts.
- Get a first role as a marketing or CRM executive where you build and send email campaigns, even for a small business or charity.
- Complete free HubSpot Academy and Salesforce Trailhead courses, and consider a paid Salesforce certification once you use the platform at work.
- Learn to segment customers and analyse campaign results in Excel or SQL, so you can show the revenue each automated campaign generates.
- Study UK GDPR and PECR consent rules for email and SMS marketing, and learn how your company records opt-ins and unsubscribes.
- Build automated email flows such as welcome, abandoned basket and win-back emails, and A/B test subject lines, timing and offers.
- Keep a short portfolio of campaigns with results, such as open, click and conversion rates, to use in interviews for CRM manager roles.
| Route | How long | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marketing or CRM executive, then promotion | 1-3 years | Free | Graduates and school leavers |
| Level 3 or 4 marketing apprenticeship | 1-2 years | Paid by the employer | Earning while you learn |
| Move across from data or sales operations | Under 1 year | Platform course fees vary | Analysts and CRM admins |
How long it takes
Expect one to three years from a first email or CRM executive role to a CRM manager post. People moving up from a CRM specialist or data analysis role can often step up in under a year.
