How to Become a DevOps Engineer in the UK

DevOps engineers build and run the systems that get software from a developer's laptop into production safely. You automate builds, tests and deployments with CI/CD pipelines, manage cloud infrastructure as code, run applications in containers with Docker and Kubernetes, and set up monitoring so problems are caught early. Many teams also expect you to join an on-call rota.

Few people start in DevOps straight away. The usual route is two to five years as a software engineer, systems administrator or IT Support Technician first, picking up Linux, scripting and cloud skills along the way.

How to become a DevOps engineer in the UK

No degree is required, although many DevOps engineers have one in computing or a related subject. Employers care most about hands-on skills in Linux, a scripting language such as Python or Bash, Git, CI/CD tools, containers and at least one cloud platform. Cloud certifications such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate, Microsoft Azure Administrator or the Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) help you get past CV screening. You can also train through a Level 4 apprenticeship in DevOps or platform engineering, or a Skills Bootcamp in cloud computing, or move across from a cloud engineer or back-end developer role.

  1. Get comfortable on the Linux command line, including file permissions, processes, networking basics, SSH and reading logs.
  2. Learn Git and a scripting language, usually Python or Bash, then automate a repetitive task you do at work or at home.
  3. Build a CI/CD pipeline with a tool such as GitHub Actions, GitLab CI or Jenkins that tests and deploys a small app automatically.
  4. Package that app with Docker, run it on Kubernetes, and define the cloud infrastructure in Terraform so it can be rebuilt from code.
  5. Take one cloud certification, such as AWS Solutions Architect Associate or Azure Administrator, to prove your core cloud knowledge.
  6. Add monitoring and alerting with tools such as Prometheus and Grafana, and write up how you would respond to an incident.
  7. Look for an internal move from development, support or sysadmin work into platform tasks, or apply for junior DevOps roles.

How long it takes

Expect two to five years, because most employers want experience as a developer, sysadmin or support engineer before a DevOps role. A Level 4 apprenticeship can get you into a junior DevOps position sooner.

No. Many DevOps engineers have computing degrees, but employers mainly test practical skills in Linux, automation, cloud and containers. Certifications, an apprenticeship and a portfolio of working projects can stand in for a degree.

How much does a DevOps engineer earn in the UK?

Starting pay is around £40,000 to £55,000, rising to £65,000 to £100,000 at mid level. Senior DevOps or platform engineers can earn £105,000 to £160,000 or more, especially in London and financial services.
