How to Become an Investment Banker in the UK

Investment bankers advise companies, governments and investors on raising money and on deals such as mergers, acquisitions and stock market listings. As a junior analyst you build financial models, research companies and sectors, and prepare pitch books and deal documents. More senior bankers manage client relationships and lead negotiations.

How to become an investment banker in the UK

The main route runs through internships. First-year students apply for spring weeks, penultimate-year students for summer internships, and many graduate analyst offers go to successful interns. Banks accept any degree subject but expect strong grades, usually a 2:1 or above, and real interest in markets and deals. Some banks also run school-leaver and degree apprenticeship programmes. Others join later by moving across from corporate finance, transaction services at an accountancy firm, or management consultancy. Certain roles are covered by Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) rules, which your employer will take you through.

  1. Aim for strong A levels and a 2:1 or higher at university, as banks screen applications heavily on academic results.
  2. Apply for spring weeks in your first year at university, as these can lead to fast-track interviews for summer internships.
  3. Learn to build a three-statement financial model and a discounted cash flow valuation in Excel before your internship interviews.
  4. Follow recent UK deals in the financial press and be ready to discuss one in detail, including why it happened and how it was valued.
  5. Apply early for penultimate-year summer internships, as many applications open in the summer or autumn before the internship year.
  6. Practise numerical tests, video interviews and technical questions on accounting and valuation, which are standard in bank assessment centres.
  7. If you miss the graduate route, build experience in corporate finance or transaction services and apply for lateral analyst or associate roles.

Will investment bankers be replaced by AI?

High exposure. Analyst-level work (models, pitch books, research) is heavily exposed, so junior banking will change most. Senior roles built on relationships, negotiation and judgement on deals are much harder to automate.

The DfE study found finance and insurance to be more exposed to AI than any other UK sector.

What AI already does in this job

  • Financial models and valuation work
  • Pitch books and presentations
  • Company and market research
  • Due diligence document review

What stays with a person

  • Originating deals through relationships
  • Negotiation and reading the room
  • Judgement on price, timing and structure

Treat the analyst years as the time to build relationships and judgement, not just modelling speed. If you are looking to move, take the deal skills into roles where client trust matters more.
