What a Luxury Brand Manager does

Manage strategy, positioning and product launches for premium and luxury brands.

How to become a luxury brand manager in the UK

There is no set qualification. A degree in marketing, business, fashion management or a related subject is preferred, and some luxury groups run graduate schemes. Many people start as a marketing executive or assistant, or in retail, PR, buying or merchandising, then move into brand or product marketing at premium companies. Qualifications from the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) can strengthen your CV. A second language such as French or Italian helps with brands based abroad. Progression usually runs from brand executive to assistant brand manager, brand manager and then senior roles.

  1. Start in a marketing assistant, PR assistant or retail role at a premium or luxury brand to learn how brand standards and clienteling work.
  2. Study how luxury brands use scarcity, heritage and events, by following launches, campaigns and store openings in the trade press.
  3. Move into a brand, product marketing or trade marketing executive role where you own briefs, budgets and campaign reporting.
  4. Build commercial skills such as sell-through analysis, forecasting and margin, because luxury brand managers are judged on sales as well as image.
  5. Consider a CIM qualification, or a master's in luxury or fashion management if you are switching in from another sector.
  6. Learn a second European language and gain experience with international teams, wholesale partners or travel retail.
  7. Apply for assistant brand manager or brand manager roles with a portfolio of campaigns and launches you delivered and their results.
