How to Become a Ship Captain in the UK

A ship's captain - the Master - is the most senior officer on board and legally responsible for the vessel, crew and cargo. In the UK you get there through the Merchant Navy: a sponsored cadetship, then a series of Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) Certificates of Competency, each earned with years of sea time.

It is a long climb - typically 10 to 15 years from cadet to Master - but training is usually sponsored and paid, and command pay reflects the responsibility.

How to become a ship captain in the UK

The standard route is a deck officer cadetship sponsored by a shipping company or training provider. You study nautical science at a maritime college and spend periods at sea, finishing with your first Certificate of Competency as Officer of the Watch. From there you progress through Second Officer and Chief Officer to Master, sitting further MCA exams and building qualifying sea time at each rank.

  1. Check you can pass the ENG1 seafarer medical, including eyesight and colour vision standards for deck officers.
  2. Apply for a sponsored deck officer cadetship with a shipping company or training provider (usually needs GCSEs in maths, English and science, or A levels for degree routes).
  3. Complete the cadetship: college study in nautical science plus sea phases, typically around 3 years.
  4. Pass the MCA Officer of the Watch (OOW) Certificate of Competency and work as a junior deck officer.
  5. Build sea time and sit the Chief Mate exams to qualify as Chief Officer.

Ship Captain FAQs

Start with a sponsored Merchant Navy deck officer cadetship, qualify as Officer of the Watch with an MCA Certificate of Competency, then progress through Second Officer and Chief Officer, sitting further MCA exams and building sea time until you hold a Master Certificate of Competency.

How long does it take to become a ship captain?

Typically 10-15 years from starting a cadetship. Around 3 years to your first officer certificate, then several years at each rank to build the sea time required for Chief Officer and Master.

Do you need a degree to be a ship captain?

No. Many officers qualify through an HND or foundation degree cadetship. What is legally required is the right MCA Certificate of Competency, sea time and an ENG1 medical; a degree is optional.
