What to put on an accountant CV

Finance hiring managers look for your qualification status, the systems you know and the scope of the work you handle. This accountant CV template is centred and conservative, with fine double rules, and puts your ACCA or CIMA status and systems up front. It suits trainees, part-qualified accountants, newly qualified ACAs and finance managers, and has no photo.

It is A4, laid out for UK applications, with real, selectable text that pastes cleanly into recruiter portals. There is no subscription to cancel later.

State your qualification status precisely

Say whether you are ACA, ACCA, CIMA or AAT qualified, and the year. If you are part-qualified, list the exams passed, those remaining and when you expect to finish.

Show the scope of your work

Month-end, year-end, management accounts, VAT returns, payroll, budgeting, forecasting and audit each say something different. Give the size of the business or the entities you covered where you can share it.

List systems and Excel skills

Name systems like Sage, Xero, QuickBooks, SAP, Oracle or Dynamics, and be specific about Excel, such as pivot tables, lookups and financial modelling.

Show what you improved

A faster month-end close, a cleaner reconciliation process or a new reporting pack all show value. Describe what changed, and use your own numbers if they are not confidential.

Say practice or industry

Make it clear whether your experience is in practice or industry and, in practice, the kind of clients you looked after. Recruiters often sort candidates this way.

Questions

How should I show part-qualified status on an accountant CV?

Give the qualification, the exams passed and how many remain, for example ACCA, nine of thirteen exams passed, finishing in 2027. Add any exemptions or exam prizes. This tells employers how close you are and whether they will need to support study leave.

What should a trainee accountant CV include?

Lead with your degree or A levels, any AAT or professional exams, and your Excel skills. Then add finance, admin or customer-facing work, with examples of accuracy and handling numbers. Training contracts value commitment, so say which qualification you want to study.

Should an accountant CV list software?

Yes. Name the accounting systems and ERP software you have used, and be clear about your Excel level. Many finance roles ask for a specific system, so put the ones in the advert first and keep the list near the top.

How long should an accountant CV be?

Two sides of A4 is standard. Finance managers and directors can stay within two pages by keeping early career roles brief. Trainees and graduates can often fit everything on a single page.
