What to put on an actor CV

An actor's CV has its own rules. Casting directors and agents want your headshot, your playing age and your credits, set out so they can take them in within seconds. This actor CV template uses warm paper, a square black-and-white headshot with a sideways hello, a bold name and red headings, so each group of credits is easy to find. It suits actors at every stage, from recent graduates to working professionals.

For acting work a headshot is essential, and the photo space is built around one, though a monogram shows until you add yours. It comes in red, blue and green. Fill it in and preview every page for free, with no account needed. Pay £4.99 once to download it as PDF and Word, with a matching cover letter included. It is A4, with real, selectable text, and there is no subscription.

Lead with a current headshot

Use a recent, professional headshot that looks like you do now, with your usual hair and natural light. Casting directors need to see who will walk into the room, so update it whenever your look changes.

Give your playing age, height and Spotlight PIN

Put your playing age range, height and Spotlight PIN near the top, with eye and hair colour if you like. Leave off your date of birth, as your playing age is what matters for casting.

Group your credits by medium

List your credits under headings such as theatre, television and film, newest first. For each one, give the role, the production, the company or venue and the director, so a reader can see the range and scale of your work at a glance.

Include training and special skills

Add your drama school or acting training, plus workshops and short courses. Then list skills that casting calls ask for, such as accents and dialects, singing range, dance styles, stage combat, instruments, languages and a driving licence. Only include what you can do well on the day.

Add your agent and keep to one page

If you have an agent, put their name, agency and contact details at the top, beside your own. An acting CV is usually one page of A4, so cut older or smaller credits before the page runs over.

Questions

How is an actor CV different from a normal CV?

An acting CV lists your credits in place of a work history, grouped by medium, alongside your headshot, playing age, height, training, skills and agent details. It is usually one page, and it leaves out the long profile and job bullets you would find on a standard CV.

What should I put on an acting CV with no professional credits?

Include student productions, fringe, amateur and showcase work, and short films, each clearly labelled. Add your training, workshops and any special skills. As you book professional work, replace the earlier credits so the strongest ones always sit at the top of each section.

Should I put my age on an acting CV?

No. Give your playing age, the range of ages you can convincingly play, and leave off your date of birth. Your headshot and playing age together tell casting directors what they need to know about the parts you could take.

Do I still need a CV if I am on Spotlight?

Yes. Spotlight is the UK casting directory, and your profile there holds your credits and headshot, but agents, theatres and casting calls often ask for a CV by email as well. Keep both up to date, and put your Spotlight PIN on your CV so readers can find your profile.
