What to put on an architect CV

Architecture practices notice how a CV looks almost as much as what it says. This architect CV template uses a quiet grid, light type and lowercase headings, and puts your ARB status and software in a side column. That leaves the main column for practices, projects and the stages you worked on. It fits A4 for UK applications, with no photo.

It works for Part 1 and Part 2 assistants, newly registered architects and associates, and sits well beside a short sample portfolio. Fill in the CV and preview it for free with no account, then pay £4.99 once to download PDF and Word with a matching cover letter. Each design comes in three colourways, so you can match your portfolio's tone.

State your ARB status clearly

Only people on the ARB register can call themselves an architect in the UK. Say whether you are ARB registered or a Part 1 or Part 2 architectural assistant, and give your RIBA membership if you hold it.

Use RIBA stages to describe your role

For each project, say which RIBA Plan of Work stages you worked on, such as Stage 2 concept design or Stage 4 technical design. It shows exactly what you can do.

List projects with sector and value

Give the project name, sector, value where you can share it and your role. Housing, education, healthcare and commercial work each call for different experience.

Be precise about software

Revit, ArchiCAD, AutoCAD, Rhino, SketchUp, Enscape and the Adobe suite are common. Say how you use each, for instance Revit to Stage 4 or Rhino for massing studies.

Keep the CV and portfolio separate

Keep the CV to two pages and send a sample portfolio of a few pages as its own PDF. Bring a fuller portfolio to the interview.

Questions

Should an architect CV include a portfolio?

Send a short sample portfolio as a separate PDF alongside your CV, with a file small enough to email. Choose a few projects that match the practice's work, and show drawings and details as well as renders. Your CV can name the same projects so the two read together.

Can I call myself an architect on my CV if I am not ARB registered?

No. Architect is a protected title in the UK, and only people on the ARB register can use it. If you are working towards registration, describe yourself as a Part 1 or Part 2 architectural assistant, or as a designer, and say when you plan to take Part 3.

How long should an architect CV be?

Two sides of A4 is standard. Use the CV for practices, projects, stages and software, and let the portfolio carry the visuals. A cluttered CV can count against you in a design-led field, so keep the spacing generous.

What should a Part 1 architectural assistant CV include?

Lead with your degree, university and Part 1 status, then any practice experience, even short placements. Add your software skills and level, model making and hand drawing, and a few studio projects. Say what kind of practice and projects you want for your year out.
