What to put on a doctor CV

A medical CV is read by consultants and medical staffing teams who want to confirm your registration and see your training at a glance. This doctor CV template has a deep red side column for your GMC number and rotations, and keeps audits, teaching and research in the main column. It suits foundation doctors, core trainees and other resident (junior) doctors.

Use it for clinical fellow, trust grade and locum posts, and to keep your record ready for interviews. It is laid out on A4 for UK applications, with no photo. Fill it in and preview every page for free with no account, then pay £4.99 once to download PDF and Word, with a matching cover letter included.

Put GMC details in the side column

Give your GMC number, your registration type and whether you hold a licence to practise. Add your current grade, such as FY2 or CT1, and your national training number if you have one.

List rotations clearly

For each post, give the specialty, hospital or trust, grade and dates. Foundation doctors can list each rotation separately to show the range of specialties covered.

Show audit and quality improvement

Describe each audit or QIP briefly: the question, what you changed and whether you closed the loop. Note any presentations, posters or prizes that came from it.

Include teaching and research

Teaching medical students, running simulation sessions, publications, presentations and research projects all matter, especially for specialty and academic posts. Use a standard citation style for publications.

Add courses and exams

List life support courses such as ALS or ATLS, postgraduate exam parts passed, such as MRCP or MRCS, and any higher degrees or teaching qualifications.

Questions

What should a junior doctor CV include?

Your GMC number, current grade and rotations with specialty, trust and dates. Then audits and quality improvement, teaching, research and publications, presentations, courses and postgraduate exams. Add leadership roles such as rota rep or mess president. Keep the structure clear, as consultants often read it quickly before shortlisting.

Do I need a CV for specialty training applications?

Specialty training applications in the UK go through Oriel, with set questions and a self-assessment of your portfolio, so a CV is not usually uploaded. Interviewers will still ask about your achievements, and clinical fellow, trust grade and locum posts often ask for a CV, so it is worth keeping one current.

How long should a medical CV be?

Medical CVs often run longer than the usual two pages, because publications, audits and courses add up. Foundation doctors can usually fit everything on two or three pages. Keep each entry concise and put the most relevant work first.

Should I put my GMC number on my CV?

Yes. Your GMC number lets an employer check your registration and licence to practise quickly, so put it at the top of the side column. Say whether your registration is full or provisional, so the reader knows which posts you can take.
