What to put on an internship CV

When you apply for an internship, your degree and what you have done with it are your strongest evidence. This internship CV template puts your degree and projects first, with a side column for skills and societies, so a graduate recruiter sees your course, grades and initiative together. It is A4, laid out for UK applications, with no photo.

It suits summer internships, spring weeks, placement years and graduate schemes. Fill it in and preview every page for free with no account. When it reads right, pay £4.99 once to download PDF and Word, with a matching cover letter included. You can switch to any other template at any time without losing a word, which helps if a sector expects a plainer look.

Lead with your degree

Give your university, course, year and predicted or achieved grade. Add relevant modules and your dissertation topic if it links to the internship.

Treat projects like jobs

Group projects, coursework, hackathons, research and personal projects can each get a short entry with what you did, the tools you used and the result.

Use societies to show responsibility

Committee roles, sports captaincy, running events or managing a society budget show leadership and organisation. Put the role in the side column, and give a substantial one its own entry in the main column.

Include all work experience

Part-time jobs in retail or hospitality show reliability, customer skills and time management. Spring weeks, insight days and virtual work experience programmes are worth listing too.

Match the firm's language

Read the advert and the firm's values, and use the same words for skills you can back up. One page is right for most internships.

Questions

How long should an internship CV be?

One side of A4 is best for most internships, as recruiters expect students to have limited experience. If you have a placement year, research or several relevant roles, two pages is fine, as long as everything on it supports the application.

What if I have no relevant work experience for an internship?

Use your degree projects, societies, volunteering and part-time jobs. For each one, pick the skill the internship asks for, such as analysis, teamwork or communication, and give an example of when you used it. Recruiters hiring interns expect exactly this.

Should I include A levels on an internship CV?

Yes, while you are still at university. Many graduate employers look at A level or equivalent results, so list your subjects and grades under your degree. GCSEs can be summarised in one line that mentions English and Maths.

Do I need a different CV for each internship?

Keep one master version and adjust the profile, skills and order of projects for each application. A bank, a charity and a tech start-up will each care about different things, so lead with the evidence that suits each one.
