What to put on a construction CV
Site managers and labour agencies check your cards before they check anything else. This construction CV template has bold condensed headings on a dark band, with your tickets, cards and licences up front where they are seen straight away. Your sites, roles and skills follow. It suits labourers, site operatives, plant operators, groundworkers, trades and supervisors, and it has no photo.
Fill it in and preview every page for free, with no account needed. Pay £4.99 once to download it as PDF and Word, with a matching cover letter included. It is A4 and laid out for UK applications, and the text is real and selectable, so agencies can copy your details into their systems. Switch to any other template at any time without losing a word.
Give your CSCS card colour and expiry
Say which card you hold, such as the green labourer card, the blue skilled worker card or a gold supervisor card, with the expiry date. Most UK sites will not let you on without a valid card, so make it the first thing a reader sees.
List plant and access tickets
Add CPCS or NPORS tickets for plant, such as 360 excavator, forward tipping dumper or telehandler. For CPCS, say whether you hold the red trained operator or blue competent operator card. Include PASMA for mobile towers and IPAF for MEWPs.
Show supervisory courses
If you run a gang or a section, add SSSTS, and if you manage a site, SMSTS, with the date you passed. Both need refreshing every five years, so keep the dates current.
Describe sites and duties
For each job, give the main contractor or employer, the type of project, such as housing, commercial or civils, and what you did, like groundworks, drainage, shuttering or traffic marshalling. Mention reading drawings and setting out if you can.
Add the practical extras
A full driving licence, your own transport and PPE, a first aid certificate and being willing to work away or on nights all help an agency place you. One or two sides of A4 is plenty.
Questions
What should a construction CV include?
Your CSCS card and other tickets with expiry dates, a short profile, then your sites and roles with the type of work you did. Add your driving licence, health and safety courses and any NVQs. Keep it practical and clear, with your newest job first and any gaps explained.
How do I write a labourer CV?
Lead with your CSCS labourer card and any extra tickets, such as asbestos awareness, manual handling or a dumper ticket. List the sites and contractors you have worked for, the jobs you did, like clearing, loading out or helping trades, and whether you can start early and travel.
What is a site operative CV?
A site operative CV is much like a labourer CV, but it usually shows more specific skills, such as groundworks, concreting, drainage or operating small plant. Name the tasks you are competent in, the tickets that back them up and the NVQ level you hold or are working towards.
Do I need an NVQ to get a CSCS card?
Not for every card. The green labourer card needs the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test and a Level 1 health and safety award. Most skilled cards, such as the blue skilled worker card, need a relevant NVQ or SVQ at Level 2 or above.
