Can you appeal a redundancy?

There is no legal right to appeal a redundancy, but Acas says your employer should offer you the chance to. Appeal in writing, by the deadline in your redundancy letter or within a reasonable time if it doesn't give one.

You can ask to bring someone with you, and for the appeal to be heard by a manager who wasn't involved in the decision.

Grounds for appeal

  • Unfair selection: the criteria weren't applied fairly, or your scores are wrong.
  • Discrimination: being selected because of age, sex, disability or pregnancy, for example. Using length of service alone is likely to be age discrimination.
  • Poor consultation: you weren't properly consulted before the decision.
  • No alternative job offered when a suitable one was available.
  • Your job hasn't really gone: the work is still needed.

Your redundancy rights

You are normally entitled to statutory redundancy pay if you have worked for your employer for two years or more. From 6 April 2026, a week's pay is capped at £751, and the most you can get is £22,530.

Statutory notice is at least one week if you have worked there between one month and two years, one week for each full year between two and twelve years, and twelve weeks if you have worked there for twelve years or more. Your contract may give you more.

Redundancy appeal on unfair scoring

Challenges the selection scores, with evidence.

21 October 2026

Dear Karen,

Appeal against redundancy

I am writing to appeal against the decision, set out in your letter of 14 October 2026, to make me redundant from my role as Warehouse Supervisor.

My grounds for appeal are that the selection criteria were not applied fairly to me, and my scores do not reflect my performance.

I was scored 2 out of 5 for attendance, but apart from approved holiday I have had no absences in the last two years. I was also scored 2 for skills, although I hold the forklift and first aid certificates the criteria ask for.

I would like my scores to be reviewed and the decision to make me redundant withdrawn.

I would like to attend an appeal meeting, heard if possible by a manager who was not involved in the original decision, and to be accompanied by a colleague or trade union representative.

Please confirm that you have received this appeal, and let me know the date of the meeting.

Yours sincerely,

Daniel Price
Warehouse Supervisor

Redundancy appeal: no alternative job offered

Points to a vacancy that was available.

21 October 2026

Dear Karen,

Appeal against redundancy

I am writing to appeal against the decision, set out in your letter of 14 October 2026, to make me redundant from my role as Warehouse Supervisor.

My grounds for appeal are that I was not properly consulted before the decision was made; and that I was not offered a suitable alternative role that was available.

A Team Leader vacancy at the Wakefield site was advertised on 1 October, during my consultation period, and I was not told about it or offered it.

I would like to be offered the Team Leader role at Wakefield, with a trial period.

Questions people ask

Is there a legal right to appeal a redundancy?

No, but Acas says employers should offer an appeal. Appeal in writing by the deadline in your redundancy letter, or as soon as you can.

What are good grounds for a redundancy appeal?

Unfair selection or scoring, discrimination, not being properly consulted, not being offered a suitable alternative job, or your job not really disappearing.

Am I entitled to redundancy pay?

Usually, if you have worked for your employer for two years or more. From 6 April 2026, a week's pay is capped at £751 and the most you can get is £22,530.

What if the appeal fails?

Talk to Acas. Before an employment tribunal claim you must go through early conciliation, and time limits apply: from 1 October 2026, most claims have 6 months where the problem happened on or after that date.
