Remote Accounting Jobs UK: Which Roles Work From Home, and How to Find Them
Which accounting jobs in the UK are most often remote or hybrid, from bookkeeping and payroll to management accounts and practice roles. What employers expect, the software they ask for, how to find genuine vacancies, how to spot scams and what each role pays.
By Tony Musso on
Accounting lends itself to working from home more than most professions. Ledgers, payroll runs and month-end packs live in cloud software, clients send receipts through apps, and much of the conversation with managers already happens on video calls. That has opened accounting work up to people who live a long way from a city office, look after family, or simply do their best work at a quiet desk at home.
Not every accounting job works that way, though. Some roles are fully remote, many are hybrid, and some, especially early in a training contract, still expect you on site most of the week. This guide covers which UK accounting jobs are most often remote or hybrid, what employers expect, how to find genuine vacancies, how to avoid scams aimed at home workers, and what the main roles pay.
Accounting roles that often work remotely
Bookkeeping
Bookkeepers record sales, purchases and payments, reconcile bank accounts and keep the books ready for an accountant or for HMRC. The work happens inside cloud software, so it is one of the easiest accounting jobs to do from home. Employed bookkeeping roles are often hybrid, and part-time or freelance arrangements are frequently fully remote.
Payroll
Payroll staff work out pay, tax, National Insurance, pension contributions and other deductions, then report the figures to HMRC. Most payroll software runs online, but the deadlines are fixed, so employers need to know you will be online and dependable on every pay day. Payroll bureaus, which run payroll for many client businesses, and the payroll teams of larger employers both advertise hybrid roles.
Management accounts and in-house finance teams
Assistant accountants, management accountants and financial accountants inside businesses produce monthly reports, budgets, forecasts and reconciliations. Many of these teams now work hybrid. Month-end, year-end, budget meetings and the annual audit are when you are most likely to be asked in.
Practice roles at firms offering hybrid
Accountancy practices prepare accounts, tax returns and VAT returns for clients, and plenty of firms, from small independents to large national practices, now offer hybrid working. Audit is the area to watch: auditors often spend time at client premises, so an audit role may mean travel rather than home working. Trainees are also more likely to be asked in, because much early learning comes from sitting alongside experienced colleagues.
Self-employed bookkeeping with your own clients
Working for yourself gives you the most say over where you work. Self-employed bookkeepers take on clients such as sole traders, tradespeople and local firms, and many work entirely from home. You also have to find clients, price your work and handle your own tax. Anyone offering bookkeeping or accountancy services as a business needs anti-money laundering supervision, through a professional body they belong to or through HMRC. GOV.UK sets out the current rules, and our guide to becoming self-employed in the UK covers the basics.
How remote each type of role tends to be
| Role | Usual pattern | What tends to bring you in |
|---|---|---|
| Self-employed bookkeeper | Often fully remote | Occasional client meetings |
| Employed bookkeeper | Hybrid is common | Team days, training |
| Payroll administrator or specialist | Hybrid or remote | Onboarding, system changes |
| Assistant or management accountant | Hybrid is common | Month-end, year-end, budget meetings |
| Practice accountant (accounts and tax) | Hybrid at many firms | Client meetings, busy seasons |
| Auditor | Mix of office, client site and home | Client site visits |
| Trainee in any of these roles | More time on site | Learning on the job |
These are general patterns, not rules. Each employer sets its own policy, so ask at interview how many days the team really spends in the office. In our career profiles, the bookkeeper and payroll specialist work environment is "Office or hybrid", while the accountant profile says "Office or remote, busy at year-end".
What employers expect before you work from home
Qualifications
Qualifications carry extra weight for remote roles, because they reassure an employer that you can work without someone checking over your shoulder. AAT is the qualification most often asked for in bookkeeping and junior accounts jobs. ACCA, CIMA and ACA are the main chartered routes, and many payroll professionals study with the CIPP. You don't always need to be fully qualified, but being able to say exactly which level or papers you have passed helps. Our accounting qualifications page compares the routes, and the accounting and bookkeeping courses page lists ways to study online.
Software
Adverts regularly ask for experience of cloud packages such as Xero, QuickBooks or Sage, alongside solid Excel skills and, for payroll jobs, a dedicated payroll system. Nobody expects you to know them all. Getting confident in one, and showing you can learn another quickly, goes a long way. Some providers offer free training and certification for users, which gives you something concrete to add to your CV.
Working habits
Employers hiring for home-based roles also look for:
- Reliability with deadlines. VAT returns, payroll and month-end close don't move.
- Clear written communication. Most questions go over email or chat.
- Careful handling of data. You'll see bank details and personal information, so you need a private place to work and a secure connection.
- A workable setup. Some employers supply equipment and others expect you to use your own.
What remote accounting jobs pay
Our career data doesn't hold separate figures for remote roles, so the table shows UK-wide ranges for each career. Remote and hybrid jobs are advertised across the same ranges, and any one advert depends on the employer, the level and the location it is benchmarked against.
| Career | Starting | Mid-career | Senior |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bookkeeper | £20,000 to £28,000 | £28,000 to £40,000 | £45,000 to £65,000 |
| Payroll specialist | £24,000 to £30,000 | £32,000 to £45,000 | £48,000 to £65,000 |
| Accountant | £24,000 to £32,000 (trainee) | £45,000 to £70,000 (qualified) | £90,000 to £200,000+ (partner / CFO) |
| Tax advisor | £35,000 to £45,000 | £50,000 to £70,000 | £80,000 to £150,000+ |
| Finance manager | £45,000 to £60,000 | £60,000 to £85,000 | £95,000 to £140,000 |
Self-employed bookkeepers set their own rates, so their income depends on how many clients they keep and how they price.
How to find remote accounting jobs
- Use the remote filter. Most large job boards let you filter by remote or hybrid. Search titles such as "remote bookkeeper" or "hybrid payroll administrator" and save them as alerts.
- Check professional body job boards. AAT, ACCA, CIMA, ICAEW and the CIPP all run job boards.
- Speak to specialist finance recruiters. Good ones know which employers are genuinely flexible.
- Approach employers directly. Payroll bureaus, cloud-focused practices and outsourced finance providers often deliver their whole service online.
- Widen your search area. For a fully remote job, the employer's location matters less. Our guides to accounting jobs in London and accounting jobs in Manchester show what the two largest markets offer.
If you're open to home-based work outside accounting, our work from home jobs guide covers a wider spread of roles.
How to spot a remote job scam
Home-based finance jobs attract fraudsters, because the work involves money and applicants rarely meet anyone in person. Be cautious if:
- you're asked to pay for training, software, a starter kit or a background check
- you're offered the job without a proper interview, or everything happens over a messaging app
- the role involves receiving money into your own bank account and passing it on, which can drag you into money laundering
- you're asked for bank details, a passport copy or your National Insurance number before you have a written offer
- the pay is far above similar adverts for the same work
- the company has no clear address or website, or writes from a free email account
Look the company up on the Companies House register and check the vacancy also appears on the employer's own website. If you think you've been targeted, report it to Action Fraud in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, or to Police Scotland. JobsAware also gives free help with suspected job scams.
Making your application work for a remote role
Your CV has to show you can deliver without close supervision. Name the software you use, give a sense of your volume, such as the number of clients or payrolls you handle, and put your qualification status near the top. If you've worked from home before, give one example of how you kept things moving. The TonyKnows CV builder can help you set it out. In interviews, expect questions about how you plan your day and how you keep client data safe.
