Data analyst CV example and template

A strong data analyst CV shows the tools you use, such as SQL, Excel, Python and Power BI or Tableau, and then proves what your analysis changed: money saved, hours freed, decisions made. This example has a short technical skills list near the top and bullets that name the tool, the action and the result. If you are new to data, put a projects section above your work history.

Key skills for a data analyst CV

  • SQL - A standard requirement. Say what you do with it: joins, aggregations, window functions, views.
  • Excel - Pivot tables, XLOOKUP and Power Query are still daily tools in many roles.
  • Visualisation - Power BI or Tableau, and what you built with it.
  • Python or R - Pandas, data cleaning and automation, often desirable for juniors and essential for seniors.
  • Business impact - Not "built dashboards" but what changed because people used them.
  • Communication - Explaining findings to people who do not work with data.
  • Data handling - Data quality and UK GDPR, especially with customer or patient data.

What a UK data analyst CV needs

  1. A technical skills section - Grouped: languages, tools, methods. Keep it honest; interviewers will ask about each.
  2. A projects section - Two or three projects with real UK data, a clear question and a link. Move it above experience if you are new to data.
  3. Certifications - Such as the Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst certification, or a data apprenticeship or bootcamp.
  4. Links - GitHub or a portfolio as plain text, with a short README for each project.
  5. Domain knowledge - Retail, NHS, finance or logistics knowledge is a real asset in analysis.

Data Analyst CV questions

How do I write a data analyst CV with no experience?

Put a projects section above your work history, with two or three projects using real UK data and a link to the code. Then show any data work from your current job and add training such as a bootcamp or apprenticeship.

Which skills matter most on a data analyst CV?

SQL and Excel are standard, followed by Power BI or Tableau and, increasingly, Python. Communication matters too, so show you can explain findings.

Should I put my GitHub on my CV?

Yes, if it shows finished, readable work. Add it to your contact details and next to each project.

Do I need a degree to become a data analyst?

Not always. Many employers care more about skills and projects. Apprenticeships, bootcamps and self-taught portfolios are all common routes.
