Electrical engineering covers building services, power, controls and electronics, so say which in the first line, then show the systems you designed, the standards you worked to and the results. This example is for a building services electrical design engineer working towards chartership with the IET.

Key skills for an electrical engineer CV
Design to standards - BS 7671, and the codes your sector uses, such as for HV or rail.
Power systems - LV and HV distribution, protection and earthing.
Controls and automation - PLC, SCADA and instrumentation, for industrial roles.
Site and commissioning - Witness testing, snagging and handover.
Renewables - PV, battery storage, EV charging and grid connections.
Working with others - Architects, mechanical engineers, contractors and clients.
What a UK electrical engineer CV needs
IET membership and registration - Your grade and progress towards IEng or CEng through the IET.
Your area - Building services, power distribution, rail, controls, electronics or renewables.
Standards - BS 7671 and the 18th Edition, plus any sector standards you design to.
Authorisations - HV authorised person or competent person status, if you hold it.
Project values and types - Scale and type of buildings or systems.
Achievement bullets to adapt
The figures are invented to show the format. Use your own.
Designed LV distribution, lighting and small power for projects up to £20m.
Redesigned a school block's distribution, saving the contractor around £40,000.
Produced lighting designs in Dialux to meet the client's brief.
Witnessed testing and commissioning on four projects.
Specified EV charging and PV systems for two commercial buildings.
Electrical Engineer CV questions
Should I put the 18th Edition on an electrical engineer CV?
Yes, if you hold it and the role involves low voltage design or installation. It shows you know the current wiring regulations, BS 7671.
What is the difference between an electrician and an electrical engineer?
Electricians install, test and maintain electrical systems. Electrical engineers usually design systems and manage projects, often with a degree or HNC. Many engineers start as electricians.
How do I show progress towards CEng?
Give your IET membership grade and say you are working towards CEng, for example through a mentoring scheme or a training programme.
