Mechanical engineer CV example and template

Engineering managers read a CV for evidence of real technical decisions: what you designed, improved or fixed, the tools you used and the measured result. This example puts CAD and analysis skills near the top and says where the engineer is on the route to chartership. Graduates can use the same layout with a key projects section first.

Use this example: the CV builder opens with it filled in on the Gunmetal template, free to edit and preview. Downloading the CV and matching cover letter costs £4.99 once.

Mechanical Design Engineer · AMIMechE · Huddersfield · james.whitaker@example.com · 07700 900921

Personal statement

Mechanical design engineer with six years' experience in industrial pumps and valves, using SolidWorks, ANSYS and GD&T to take products from concept to production. Associate Member of IMechE, working towards CEng. Known for design-for-manufacture changes that cut unit cost without compromising performance. Looking for a senior design engineer role in energy or water.

Experience

Mechanical Design Engineer, Calder Flow Systems, Huddersfield (Mar 2022 - Present)

  • Redesigned a cast aluminium pump housing in SolidWorks, removing two machining operations and cutting unit cost by 14%.
  • Tightened a bore tolerance from ±0.05 mm to ±0.02 mm after root cause analysis on a seal leak, reducing warranty returns from 3.1% to 0.6% over 12 months.
  • Ran FEA in ANSYS on a lifting bracket, cutting mass by 22% while keeping a safety factor above 2.0.
  • Led a DFMEA for a new gearbox variant with a team of six, closing 18 high-priority actions before design freeze.

Graduate Mechanical Engineer, Calder Flow Systems, Huddersfield (Sep 2020 - Feb 2022)

  • Produced 2D drawings to BS 8888 with GD&T for more than 60 parts, with no drawing-related supplier non-conformances in a year.
  • Managed 35 engineering change requests from proposal to release with production, quality and purchasing.

Placement Engineer, Pennine Precision Components, Bradford (Jul 2018 - Jul 2019)

  • Designed a welding fixture in AutoCAD that cut set-up time from 25 to 8 minutes per batch.

Education

  • MEng Mechanical Engineering (IMechE accredited), 2:1, University of Sheffield, 2016 - 2020. Final-year project: fatigue life of welded joints in pump frames.

Training and certifications

  • Associate Member, IMechE; working towards CEng, Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Current

Key skills for a mechanical engineer CV

  • CAD - SolidWorks, CATIA, Creo, Inventor or Siemens NX. Pair each with something you designed.
  • Analysis - FEA, CFD, hand calculations and tolerance stack-ups.
  • Drawings and standards - 2D drawings with GD&T to BS 8888 or the ISO standards your sector uses.
  • Design for manufacture - Machining, casting, sheet metal and moulding, and cost-aware design.
  • Quality and problem solving - Root cause analysis, DFMEA and PFMEA, 8D and lean methods.
  • Testing and validation - Test plans, prototypes and using results to improve the design.
  • Working across teams - Production, quality, purchasing and suppliers.

What a UK mechanical engineer CV needs

  1. IMechE membership and registration - Give your membership grade and progress towards IEng or CEng. Registration is awarded by the Engineering Council through institutions such as IMechE.
  2. An accredited degree - Say if your degree is IMechE accredited, as it shows you meet the academic part of the standard.
  3. Tools and standards - Your CAD and analysis software, and the drawing and design standards you work to.
  4. Sector - Aerospace, automotive, defence, energy, rail and medical devices each have their own regulations.
  5. Security clearance - If a role needs it, say you hold or are eligible for it, without personal details.

Mechanical Engineer CV questions

Which CAD software should I put on my mechanical engineer CV?

The tools you can use confidently, each backed by a project. Check the advert: CATIA is common in aerospace and automotive, and SolidWorks in general manufacturing.

Should I put IMechE membership on my CV?

Yes. Give your grade and say if you are working towards IEng or CEng. Only claim the grade you hold.

How do I write a graduate mechanical engineer CV?

Lead with your degree and a key projects section. Write up your final-year project, placement and team projects like jobs, with tools and measured results.

How long should a mechanical engineer CV be?

Two pages at most. Graduates can often fit everything on one.
