Key skills for a cleaner CV

  • Thoroughness - Cleaning to a specification every time, not just when someone is checking.
  • Chemical safety - COSHH training and using the right product for each job.
  • Colour coding - Using the right cloths and mops for each area to stop cross-contamination.
  • Equipment - Floor scrubbers, buffers and carpet cleaners, if you can use them.
  • Trustworthiness - Key holding, alarm codes and working alone in client premises.
  • Time management - Finishing the whole site in the hours allowed.
  • Reporting - Telling the supervisor or site manager about repairs and hazards.

What a UK cleaner CV needs

  1. Types of site - Offices, schools, hospitals, hotels, retail or homes. Some sites need extra checks.
  2. COSHH and safety training - Chemical safety, manual handling and any BICSc training.
  3. DBS check - Schools, nurseries and hospitals usually need an enhanced DBS check. Say if you have one or are on the Update Service.
  4. Key holding - If clients trust you with keys and alarms, say so.
  5. Hours and availability - Early mornings, evenings and weekends are common in cleaning.

Cleaner CV questions

Do I need qualifications to be a cleaner?

No, but COSHH training and a cleaning skills course such as BICSc units help, especially for commercial and healthcare cleaning.

Should I put domestic cleaning on my CV?

Yes. Treat it like a job: say how many regular clients you had, for how long, and whether you held keys.

Do cleaners need a DBS check?

For schools, nurseries, care homes and hospitals, usually yes. Office cleaning may not need one, but having one can help.
